Favela Rock is back for only the second time this year and we’re getting excited for another summer edition. However, with some of the regularly family out this time we have called on a few new guns to deliver the knock-out party you have come to expect. So expect epic latin club jams with “Cool Hand” TPC, “Westside” Mexi with some monstrous hip-hop hits, “Captain” Edo will have the non-stop floor fillers and there will be some new flavour with “Tsunami” Mat Cant and to cap off the night the “Killer from Manila” Ems will ensure you end on a high.

So set aside your favourite pair of kicks, or heels, and set your mind to warp as this Saturday we do it rent party style and celebrate another month that was.

Get there early and take advantage of the $5 shots before midnight.

Future Music Festival
Flemington Race Course
Sunday Mar. 7

Most economists are in state of panic, or at the least denial. Most businesses will be sticking to the formula this year so it is refreshing to see such a daring an innovative line-up at this year’s Future Music Festival.

The festival is headlined by one of the most the hyped groups of last year, N*E*R*D and one of the most heralded dance music duos of our time, Basement Jaxx, whilst still offering great second tier acts. The Brazilian indie-pop 8-piece Cansei de Ser Sexy plus epic house DJs Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello and glitch dance originator Mr Oizo, are all notable additions to the line-up.

Crookers
We Make it Good mix

Crookers, that crazy Italian duo who started out making staunch hip-hop then banging electro have explored a variety of styles on the latest mix for We Make It Good. They start off with some Italian kitsch and keep the track selection interesting with a bunch of unreleased tracks in-between more recognized hits – all making for good Friday afternoon listening. NOTEWORTHY – check out the third track - Rusko’s ‘Boo Woost’ – just one of the reasons he killed it while he was out here recently.

Thomas Jeppe
The Height of Elegance

Utopian Slumps
25 Easey St Collingwood (via alley)
Friday 27 February 6 – 9pm
Exhibition 28 February – 21 March 2009

Referencing a nostalgia for the past, Thomas Jeppe's first Melbourne solo exhibition will include large-scale colour paintings on canvas, monochrome acrylics on paper and a major sculptural work.

In the front room of the gallery the title work, The Height of Elegance, depicts a grand piano, resplendent in crisp line and tidy compositioning. The work is centred between two graphic works, Anachronology and Anachronology 2 (After Us), grounding it in appreciation for the archaic.

In the main gallery, Perpetual Motion: Right Wing Fantasy presents a Tigermoth biplane. A symbol of early aviation from the previous century, the biplane continues to fly today in outmoded nostalgia. As depicted in the canvas the plane lays disabled, without its left wings, casting an air of suspicion on its remaining right wings. Parodied in pastel hues, the portrayal throws further doubt upon this right wing fantasy.

Craig 'KR' Costello
New Work

Don't Come
Lvl 2, Royal Arcade, 314 Little Collins St, Melbourne
March 27 - April 7

Starting out in New York City, KR aka Craig Costello has fused his origins in graffiti with a form of abstract expression that draws on the street art’s traditions while recontextualising them. If you’re not familiar with his work you might still recognise his eponymous brand Krink – manufacturing inks and markers specifically designed to leave his trademark dripping effect.

His work has appeared in publications as diverse as Complex Magazine, Mass Appeal and the New York Times. This heralded artist has a solo exhibition at Don’t Come Gallery on Friday 27th of March.

Flavours

Dainty Sichuan
26 Corrs Lane, Melbourne
(03) 9663 8861

I never got to try the much-lauded Dainty Sichuan in its first incarnation at Collingwood, so when I heard the owner’s wife headed back to China indefinitely – I was disappointed to say the least. Lucky for me - and you - she returned last year and with even more on offer, set up shop in the heart of the city.

The food here is impressive in several ways. Firstly in quantity, the serves are large so bring a big appetite. They’re also very hot depending on what you order, see the Chongqing Chicken – a dish that is more chili than chicken. But most importantly everything here is delicious. Each dish fuses the Sichuan peppers or chili with a strong complimentary spice, such as the cumin infused lamb on toothpicks that will torturously make you breathe fire whilst being unable to stop eating. But no problem, just wash it down with a soy drink or a refreshing Tsingtao. There is also a fine array of vegetarian options that pack just as much chili punch.

Shaq dance spectacular
It's Shaq, and he's dancing...

I can’t work out if we’re becoming Shaq obsessed or this is a generally bizarre spectacle. I’m leaning to the latter. If you have ever read Shaq’s Twitter you will know this is not a spoof, despite it looking as such.
